This
hitch was invented in 1985 to allow paneling and wallboard to be hauled by the
same pickup that pulls a gooseneck trailer. The ball can be removed with a
hammer in less than 15 seconds from the top side. The ball is machined from a
solid bar especially for this hitch. Different heights are available. The
standard is 5 1/2 inches above the floor of the bed. The latch works similar to
a bolt in a rifle and almost as fast. The mounting assembly is designed to fit
specific vehicles and comes complete so the installer has a standard
proven product. Everything is bolted to the frame so there is no welds to
fail or damage to the frame, and the hitch can be moved to another pickup
when trading trucks. Several
design changes have been made since ‘85, nearly all to do with mounting under
newly designed trucks and to facilitate manufacturing. There
has not been a single safety failure in any hitch made on
this design. There have been wrecked hitches with bent mounting, but no
separation of components or a bent ball even when the truck and trailer were
totaled. This
hitch isn’t cheap, but buying a new pickup and putting a piece of junk iron in
the bed to pull a trailer is like buying a new boat and using a cement block for
an anchor. Prices run $450 to $650 installed. Dealer
installation is recommended because some of the methods used require practice to
achieve professional results. ( Do you really want to experiment on your new,
shiny, expensive truck?) Actually, dealers are required to have a factory
representative walk them through the first installations and are kept informed
of new developments.
