Most always, damage to trailer hitches and couplers occurs when backing. Most drivers are unaware that reverse gear is the lowest ratio in the transmission, therefore the most powerful. If the trailer drags into a high spot or curb when backing, the driver might feel only a slight resistance and apply more power than the coupler or hitch can bear. This is especially true with a gooseneck or fifth wheel, because the hitch will increase down pressure on the rear tires preventing them from slipping.
