No Standardization

There are no agencies to assign, test or enforce "Load ratings" An inquiry to the D.O.T was answered with the statement that " ......Each manufacturer sets their own load ratings....."

The A.S.A.M.E. (American Society of Automotive Manufacturing Engineers) recommends (but has no power to enforce) bending the hitch in a calibrated press and the pressure to bend it is 300% of what it is to be rated if it is a ball and 115% of its rating if it is a fifth wheel pin. (???)

I suspect that some manufacturers only test the ball or pin and apply that figure to the complete hitch. (Ask for documentation) In fact, the test results for a ball or pin can be predicted with a calculator from the steel specifications. (Steel specs. are standardized.)
